A patient, who had been admitted to intensive care after surgery, complained of the acute onset of pain and paraesthesia in the first three digits of her left hand seconds after aspiration of blood for gas analysis from a radial arterial catheter. Her nurse, who immediately noticed that air had been entrained in the tubing, removed the line promptly. The patient’s symptoms and signs resolved spontaneously within a few minutes.
